Buenos Aires loves me, Buenos Aires loves me not…

Floralis Genérica, the biggest flower in the world.

One of the most attractive things to visit during your trip to Buenos Aires especially in spring or summer are the parks that surround Recoleta Cemetery, parks that invite you to jog, bike, sunbathe or just a break for lunch at Outdoors or just enjoy our suggestion to a walking tour by your own.

In one of these stately parks, next to the Faculty of Law (University of Buenos Aires) is the “Floralis Generica”. An impressive sculpture that in a short time become a representative icon of Buenos Aires. It is located in the heart of Recoleta, in the center of the United Nations Park, a ground of four hectares of wooded limits. The flower is surrounded by trails that invite visitors to discover different perspectives of the monument. It is also placed on a water mirror that reflects the light of the sun intensifying the mirrored effect of its petals.

The sculpture was a gift for the city of the architect Eduardo Catalano in the year 2002.But the flower is not only 22 meters high, 32 meters in diameter and 18 tons of aluminum and steel. It is the first sculpture in movement of Argentina controlled by a hydraulic system and photoelectric cells.

Floralis Generica in Buenos Aires

The name “Floralis Genérica”, is a tribute to all flowers, is a large scale structure that reflects the dynamism of our time. Each night the petals are closed to allow their rest, while each morning returns to extend them in the sun to welcome the new day.

The movement of the Floralis is imperceptible: it closes so slowly that you will not notice. Just sitting for hours on a bench and watching the movement of the petals in relation to the stamens you can see that something is modified, it does not make a sound.

The flower opens every morning at 8 and closes at sunset, in a schedule that changes according to the season. There are four nights in which it remains open: September 21 (spring day), May 25 (Revolucion May) and 24 (Christmas) and December 31 (End of year).

The stumbling story

A few years after its inauguration was broken because a storm forced its petals and broke the mechanism being constantly open. The last time the mechanism of the Floralis was activated was in 2009. In order to build his flower, Catalano hired a company, which had to deal with its maintenance for 25 years. But the company left the country and the care of the sculpture remained in the hands of the City. In addition, the engine room was intrusive by squatters. As if it were not enough the original plans were lost, so the repair was a process of trial and error. The Floralis was open 24 hours, from 2009 to 2015 when it was finally repaired and recovered the movement of opening and closing according to the sun.

Another of the many arrangements that the sculpture had was the incorporation of LED lights and automatic sensors, which make the flower a beautiful spectacle even at sunset and night.
